Turn My Business Around - A Primer
The Turnaround/ Restructuring Industry (aka Distressed PE) may seem like an intimidating field. There are many ways to interact with this industry; invest, acquire or you company was forced into it. Massive fortunes have been made by turning around distressed companies but many of the terms and processes are still opaque and unapproachable. This is why I’ve started this newsletter - to make this industry that I work in everyday a little more “user friendly”.
Think of me as improving the UX of Distressed PE so that you can participate too.
I’m still working on the structure of this newsletter but here is where I’m taking it…
3 Updates Per Week
Monday (weekly) - “This Week in Distress”; I share 3 interesting updates from the world of Distressed Investing
Wednesday (2-4 times per month) - I’ll do a deep dive on a specific part of the turnaround process &/or new turnaround developments (like a new tax law) that will help you understand how the pros do it
Friday (1-2 times per month) - A Case Study on a public or private transaction including interviews with the fund manager/ investors who drove the project to an exit
Who is Mike Yarmo?
Born & currently live in Toronto Canada
Married with one child & a dog (so maybe 2 kids)
CFA & B.Comm from University of Toronto
Started my career in Consumer Packaged Goods, where I worked out of Toronto/ Chicago for ConAgra Foods. Led Pricing and Snacking Brand/ Innovation depts. Launched over 10 products in market with +$500M in annual sales.
Left corporate world at 30, raised funds from private family offices to acquire a stressed bakery distribution company. Pivoted business quickly, into a frozen foods distribution company and acquired other businesses to create help spread fixed overhead/unit. Grew business as frozen niche provided to be a good move, then sold company to a larger competitor.
Recruiting into a Distressed Advisory/PE Firm out of Chicago. As an Managing Partner, I’ve lead the workout (out of court restructurings) division since 2018, acting as CRO for over 15 companies in a wide variety of industries.
